Subject
Kansas River (Kan.) -- Flood -- 20th century
Description
Postcard with two black and white photographs of the Kaw flooding and Carl Kurz on the front. The photograph of the Kaw flooding is printed on the majority of the postcard and is looking north across the river. On the left side of the photograph is the bridge with a large crowd of people standing on it, there is also a crowd of people standing on the back along the river. The photograph on the left features Carl Kurz, a young man in a swimsuit standing proudly with his hands behind his back. A white border is around the outside edges of both photographs. A note is written on the back to Mr. Elon Graves in Osceola, Iowa from Amy in Lawrence, Kansas. Note states that the man on the front of the postcard (Carl Kurz) swam up the river and past the dam without stopping. Postmarked July 6, 1908. Information on when and where the postcard was acquired is on the back, 5/28/1999 from KCPS. Note: Carl Kurz was featured in a Lawrence Daily Journal article in the the June 15, 1908 paper for swimming up the river.
