Lawrence Massacre, Lawrence, Kan., 1863
Description
A photograph of the Griswold residence, where Dr. J.F. Griswold, Josiah Trask, Mr. Thorpe, and Harlow W. Baker were killed during Quantrill's Raid in 1863. The house survived the burning of the town. Allegedly, some men were sent to set fire to the house, but made a mistake in the command and burned the house across the street. Mrs. Griswold heard a man say to these men, "You burned the wrong house."
